Supported Accommodation

Our DO Noweyung service in Bairnsdale offers two main models of Supported Independent Living (SIL) Supports:

Separate unit accommodation

The purpose built Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) units have DO Noweyung support staff on site, including overnight, to assist with daily living task and building independent living skills when required.

Share House - Supported Independent Living

For small groups of 3-5 residents living in a dwelling in the community. This accommodation has been modified to be accessible to accommodate residents with more complex needs and who need more support. Noweyung Support Staff are there 24/7 to assist residents with all aspects of daily living.

Meet Peter

Why did you choose to move into supported accommodation?

I live in Distinctive Options Noweyung, Supported Accommodation Residential Service with my wife – Mary Lou. We used to live in rental accommodation in Bairnsdale, but things were getting harder. My wife and I, and our families felt we needed more support, so when the opportunity to move into Peters Court came up, we jumped at it.

What kind of support to you receive?

We have support from staff for our shopping, cooking, banking and budgeting and transportation. But most importantly, when I need a little bit more help someone is here to give it to me.

Does your home have any special features?

We have a great unit and also a common room. The Common Room is where all the residents can catch up with each other or with friends, play pool, do craft activities, have a meal together or watch the big footy game together. “Go Bulldogs!”

What do you like most about living here?

I especially like living here, because it is right next to Noweyung and I can walk to my favourite Noweyung program - Now Projects where I make all sorts of wooden projects out of wooden pallets.
